MARSHALL GIRLS DEFEAT GRAVES FOR REGION TITLE – 1990 NO. 2

BETH Continued from page 1 fourth foul and Elliott took her out of the game just to be safe. "As a coach it's like playing a mind game. You question yourself *When do I put her back in there,' " he said. "I don't know the right answer, but we had a chance to win the game right down to the very end, so I think it was the right thing to do." When Henry went to the bench, Marshall made its move. Beth's club scored eight unanswered points and took a 57-56 lead on Tammie Watkins baseline jumper with 2:44 to go. Elliott got Henry back in five seconds later, and Graves led one more time before the Marshals went ahead for good, 61-60 on a 10-foot jumper by Lee. Graves' last opportunity came with 15 seconds left, but Andrea Rice's 3-point attempt banged off the front of the rim and Rechelle Cadwell rebounded for Marshall. Lee was fouled seconds later and hit the free throws to ensure the Lady Marshals a trip to Bowling Green. "I think we will have a good shot up there (at state)," Beth said. "All the pressure is off us now. I feel 900 percent better now, and everything else is just icing on the cake." Marshall County's basketball team has been a complete package the past 10 years. Some feel its success is the standard by which all girls' basketball programs have been judged, not just in the First Region but all across the Commonwealth. The Lady Marshals have had it all, an undefeated season in 1984, 10 straight trips to the Sweet 16, two state championships, three Miss Kentucky Basketball players and college scholarships to schools all over the South. And that tradition is what kept this year's Lady Marshals going, according to Cadwell, the team's leading scorer. "All of that stuff stays in the Marshall 66, Graves 62 Graves County 62 Marshall County 33 GRAVES COUNTY (62) Crawford 7 7-9 21, Crump 1 0-0 00 2, Heath 0 0-0 0, Henry 7 34 18, Rice 4 2-2 15, Wiggins 3 00 0-0 6, Payne 10-0 2. There's is nothing I can say." Cadwell's 20 points and 11 rebounds paced Marshall County, but she had plenty of help. Kim Oliver, who made 5 of 5 field goals in the second period for 10 points, finished with 15, and Watkins pitched in 14. It was Watkins' layup with 1:15 to play that gave the Marshals a 63- 60 lead and forced Graves into a situation where it needed a longrange shot or two possessions to regain the lead. Instead, Marshall County's fullcourt defense confused Graves, and the Lady Eagles were forced into a turnover. The Lady Eagles got the ball back with just under a minute to go and Henry scored the team's last goal on a short jumper in the paint with 48 seconds left. Junior forward Janet Crawford led Graves with 21 points while Henry and Rice pitched in 18 and 13, respectively. "We have six of these kids coming back next year. I told them that you have to learn to walk before you can run," Elliott: said. "Next year we're going to bring all these kids back and go the next step, and I predict the region crown will come over to Graves County."
