SEDALIA GIRLS WIN REGION – 1976 PAGE 2

Belinda Davidson tallies 28 points to boost Lady Lions to region title (Continued From Page 1D) the second stanza and turned the ball over four times. The Lady Lions, meanwhile, surged to a 30-17 halftime edge behind Miss Davidson's eight points* and four markers by Miss •Morris. "I think we were a little startled," Coach Wray explained. "Everybody was waiting for everybody else to get started. I called a couple of time outs before we finally got going. "We weren't as high and ready as we were Thursday (when Sedalia smashed Paducah Tilghman, 75-57, in the semifinals.) We didn't look all that bad but we weren't all on fire at the same time. "We played spurty basketball. One girl would score two or three points and then another would. Belinda had a consistent afternoon though." Misses Bumphis and Boone returned to the lineup in the second half but cold shooting and the scoring and rebounding of Miss Davidson thwarted Lady Bengal comeback a attempts. Murray hit only 11 of 43 shots (26 per cent) after intermission. "When we got behind and the team realized Tammy wasn't 100 per cent, our spirits fell a little bit," Mrs. Fitch said. "We forced a lot of shots in the second half but we worked all the way through and never quit. I'm proud of the girls." Sedalia didn't score for nearly five minutes in the third stanza and Murray pulled within 30-22 at the 3:37 mark after a bucket by Miss Boone and three points by Miss Bumphis. A layup by Miss Flood stemmed the rally and the Lady Bengals only scored four more points the rest of the period. A four-point trip expanded Sedalia's lead to 38-26 in the final minute of the quarter. Miss Morris bagged a putback and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Vicki Cates controlled the rebound and was fouled and a technical assessed for a protest on the call. Miss Cates hit one of two free throws and Miss Davidson cashed the technical shot. Murray counted only one of its first 13 shots in the fourth quarter and Sedalia breezed to a 48-28 advantage in the first four minutes of the period behind five points by Miss Davidson and three by Miss Page. The Lady Bengals outscored the Lady Lions 12-8 the rest of the way behind full-court pressure but were never closer than 14 points. Miss Davidson was one of three players in double figures. Miss Morris sacked 12 for the Lady Lions and Miss Boone netted 10 for Murray High. For the game, Sedalia connected on 19 of 53 shots from the floor for 36 per cent and threaded 18 of 32 free throws. Murray High hit 19 of 63 field goal attempts for 30 per cent and counted two of seven charity tosses. The Lady Lions held a 44-36 rebound edge behind Miss Davidson's 14 retrieves and 13 A CUT • ABOVE THE REST! uen by Miss Cates. Miss Boone was. high for Murray with eight, seven of which came in the second half.
