LOWES GIRLS DEFEATS CALLOWAY – 1978

PAGE 7-B SUN DEMOCRAT, PADUCAH, KENTUCKY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1978 By MARK HULTMAN SD Ass'tS Sports Editor MURRAY, Ky. - The topranked Lowes Lady Blue Devils brought Marshall County's unbeaten streak to a screeching halt Thursday "night but not before fighting off the Lady - Marshals' comeback efforts in the second half. Lowes, in its first outing since Jan. 9, upped its record to 12-1 with a 61-47 triumph over the previously-unbeaten Lady Marshals, now 11-1 and ranked third.* The Lady Blue Devils weathered serious foul problems in the first half and then watched in the second half as their hosts shaved a 13-point deficit to one point. Four starters guards Laura Gourley and Tammy Simmons, forward Deena Hart and center Cindy Smith were each assessed with three personal fouls in the first half. Simmons, a 5-7 senior, provided the early spark for the Bushrod rebounds To Lowes girls deal Lakers first loss Lowes girls by accounting for her team's first 12 points enroute to a 12-3 lead at 1:16 of the first frame. She was given a rest at that point and a bucket by Susan Geveden carried Lowes to a 14-5 advantage as the frame came to an end. Besides the fact that the Lady Lakers lost their top scorer, Mina Todd, in a game Tuesday night against Marshall County, they were also hurt when starting forward Felecia Pinner picked up- her third personal foul in the opening quarter. Pinner, a 5-7 senior, proved to a thorn in side of Lowes coach Jim Long during most of the game. She maintained good board control until fouling out at the 2:17 mark of the final quarter. "We knew where to play her (Pinner)," Long said after the victory, adding "but we just didn't do the job. "'We didn't have any surprises tonight," he added. "I knew how strong they would be inside and they hustle real well.". Long also praised the jobs done by Gourley and Lowes' Stephanie Wyatt. "Gourley sparked us in the third quarter (with seven points) when we needed it. And Wyatt did a lot more than we expected her to. When she gets the ball inside,* she's tough." Long felt his team played smarter in the second half : as evidenced by the fact that no Lady Blue Devil fouled out of the contest. "We shot awful poorly in the first half (12 of 35 from the field and 1 of 7 from the charity stripe)." The Lady Blue Devils, however, countered in the 8 second half with an 11-of-26 showing from the field and a 14- of-26 performance from the free throw line. In the first half, Calloway County fared worse than did the Lowes girls. The Lady Lakers netted just 8 of 30 shots from the floor and 4 of 18 gratis attempts.
