Sedalia cops girls crown Kentucky High School Girls State Tournament for the first time. "When she wants to play and move, nobody can stop her," a jubilant Coach Ken Wray noted after the game. "They were ready for her. They tried to stop her with three people and sometimes it looked like their whole team was after her. But she outdid them." As a result, Sedalia will play in the Kentucky High School Girls State Tournament this By PAT MOYNAHAN Sun-Democrat Sports Editor MAYFIELD, Ky. - Sedalia's Lady Lions rode the heroics of 6-0 center Belinda Davidson to the greatest athletic achievement in the history of the school here Saturday afternoon. Miss Davidson scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to fire the Lady Lions past Murray High, 56-40, in the finals of the First Region Tournament and into the week at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. The Lady Lions will meet unbeaten Allen County-Scottsville, a 58-54 winner over Barren County in the Fourth District final, in the last opening round game Thursday night. The trip will be the first for Sedalia, a high school of 150 students. No other Sedalia team in any sport has won a regional title and advanced to the state level of competition. Furthermore, no other Graves County team has qualified for a 'Cats best Niagara in opening NIT play By KEN RAPPOPORT AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Potter scored 23 points, including seven in a game-breaking stretch at the end, to lead Holy Cross to an 84-77 victory over St. Peter's, N.J., in the first round of the 39th National Invitation Basketball Tournament Saturday night. In an earlier first round game Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, Melvin Watkins hit a jump shot with 1:03 left in overtime and Lew Massey hit four killing points at the end to lift North CarolinaCharlotte to a 79-74 victory. Earlier in the day, Bob Fowler led Kentucky on a ninepoint tear midway through the second half and the Wildcats went on to whip Niagara 67-61. Providence beat North Carolina A&T 84-68 as Bob Misecivius scored 16 secondhalf points. The St. Peter's-Holy Cross match wasn't decided until the final four minutes of the game, when Potter keyed a 13-3 burst that pulled the Crusaders away from a 69-68 lead to 82-73 with 40 seconds remaining. The UNC-Charlotte-San Francisco game was easily the most dramatic of the day in the NIT's opening round. The Dons seemed to have the game locked up with a 69-67 lead with 21 seconds left before the UNC-Charlotte 49ers came back to tie the in state event since Symsonia won the First Region Boys State Basketball Tournament in 1960. And, it looked like most of Graves County was on hand to support the Lady Lions. Sedalia rooters nearly filled one side of the Mayfield High School gymnasium for the showdown between the fourth-ranked Lady Lions and sixth-rated Lady Tigers. They had plenty to cheer about after Miss Davidson scored eight points in the second quarter to rocket Sedalia into a lead it never surrendered en route to its 12th consecutive triumph. and 19th victory in 22 starts. Murray High, 15-4, threw everything it had into stopping Miss Davidson and it proved the Lady Bengals undoing. Denise Bumphis, who scored 26 points in a semifinal win over St. Mary, picked up three fouls in the first five minutes of play and sat out much of the rest of the game. Tammy Boone, Murray's leading scorer, fell while trying to cut off a pass to Miss Davidson and twisted an ankle. She missed the second quarter and limped through the final two periods. "We just had bad luck today," Murray Coach Jane Fitch said. "Some of it we made ourselves. But when Tammy got hurt and Denise got in foul trouble, we had too much to overcome." "They had a little bad luck with Boone getting hurt and I can sympathize with them," Coach Wray said. "Belinda was hurt two-thirds of the season." Before Misses Bumphis and Boone exited in the opening stanza, Murray High ran up a 14-6 advantage. The score was tied three times in the early going but the Lady Bengals put together an eight-point surge midway of the period. Miss Bumphis bagged a putback to ignite the surge but went to the bench with her third foul on the return trip downcourt. Cindy Jetton followed with a pair of layups off the fast break and Marlene Farrell zeroed a jumper in the circle to provide the 14-6 margin with 3:04 showing. Sedalia went to full-court pressure and rallied with baskets by Andrea Morris and Miss Davidson before Miss Boone was injured and left the floor. After her departure, Miss Davidson came up with a threepoint play and Jennifer Flood hit from the top of the circle with 22 seconds left to lift the Lady Lions on top, 15-14. Miss Jetton regained the lead for Murray High with a layup but a free throw by Janna Page produced a 16-16 deadlock at the stop. Murray scored but one point in the second stanza without Misses Bumpis and Boone. Mount Pulaski triumphs CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) Jeff Clements scored five baskets in the fourth quarter, including the winning shot with 42 seconds to play Saturday night, to give Mount Pulaski a 59-58 victory over ROVA and the Class A Illinois high school basketball championship. Clements accounted for 10 of Mount Pulaski's 14 points in the fourth quarter to overshadow a sterling performance by ROVA's Dave Johnson, who pumped in 28 total points. Going into the fourth quarter, ROVA held a 46-45 lead before Dave Welch put Mount Pulaski ahead. The lead see-sawed right down to the very end when Clements scored what proved to be the winning basket. With 18 second left, ROVA had the ball out of bounds but Dwight Peterson took a final shot and missed. Providence held only a 42-37 lead, before Misecivius took charge of the game early in the second half. By winning the opening game, Kentucky advanced to Tuesday night's quarter-final against Kansas State, another team which drew a first-round bye. The run-and-gun Kentucky team, from the Southeastern Conference, seemed to have command of the game with a 43-33 lead well into the second half. But Niagara, an independent from upstate New York, ripped off eight straight points and pulled within 43-41 with 10:21 left. Fowler then scored his first basket of the game and converted a free throw for a threepoint play, giving Kentucky a five-point lead. The Wildcats then got field goals from Truman Claytor, Fowler and Larry Johnson for a 52-41 lead with 7:43 remaining in the game.
