Visitors Winning 23-21 Instead of playing the customary four quarters to decide the winner, Hickman high school and Franklin school battled through nine periods in the Tilghman gyni nastum Saturday night before Hickman counted & 23 to 21 victory. The game WAS odd. in that the two teams were deadlocked at the end of seven of the nine periods. Hickman led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter but the score was tied 9-9 at the half, 10-10 at the end of three quarters and 12-12 at the end of the fourth quarter. Neither team scored in the first extra period, but the second extra quarter saw each team count two goals and the score was 16-16. In the third extra quarter each team counted two points and when the fourth was ended the score was 20-20. Armstrong's goal in the of the fifth extra perlod clinched matters for Hickman although each team made a free throw. White, Hickman center, led the scorers with thirteen points while Nelson Hughes, Franklin forward, pushed him by scoring eleven markers. Hickman marched to a victory in 8 slow but interesting girls' game. The score was 22 to 13, with Miss Nugent counting seventeen of Hickman's twenty-two points. But Mussato's play was just one of the reasons the Lady Lyons slipped past Cumberland County 63-59 to advance to the final four of the small-school state tournament - the plaque could have easily been split four ways. Abbey McLeod, her tagteam partner in the paint, had 17 points and 16 boards. Olivia Akridge had 12 points and seven assists and was the primary defender that held Cumberland County star Kristen Rowe to 10 points, less than half her regular output. Lyon's six-point halftime lead disappeared in a flash, with the Lady Panthers (18-3) running off 10 straight points to start the third quarter. But Parrent got it back early in the fourth period, n nailing a pair of threes on inbounds plays to put Lyon up 48-46 at the 5:30 mark. Mussato, set up in the midpost, found McLeod on the block, and McLeod's rebound triggered a fast break that saw Akridge hit Parrent with a long pass for a layup that extended the lead to six. "They're a complete team," Cumberland County coach Brian Miller said. "They really hurt us early with their physical girls, and then when we went to a zone and packed it in, (Parrent) hit some big threes. They're a complete team." Lyon exploited its advantage in the post early and often, pounding the ball inside to Mussato and McLeod. The pair combined for 24 points and 16 boards in the first half as Lyon took a 32-26 lead at the break. "Having two post players like that is something most teams don't have," Thomas said. "Allison is our leading scorer, and people know about her, but Abbey really showed us over the summer that she was capable of doing this." "We thought it was more important to put pressure on the point to make it tough for them to get the ball to Rowe," Thomas said, "and we felt that Olivia's quickness would give her a good chance to deny her the ball. She didn't get it as much as they would have liked." Fletcher led the Lady Panthers with 21 points, much of it in transition, and Carter had to deal with a little foul trouble, but she also hit two free throws with 30 ) seconds left after Rowe was called for an intentional foul - her only two points for the game. Lyon converted 10 of 12 free throw attempts in the final two minutes to hold off the Lady Panthers' late charge. Cumberland County prefers a up-tempo style, and was never quite able to coax the Lady Lyons into joining it in a breakneck pace. "We needed to be patient in the halfcourt and get the ball inside," Akridge said. "We were able to keep it under control. That was pretty big, because we can get a little crazy sometimes." Next up for the Lady Lyons is powerful Lexington Christian, the clear favorite to win the tournament. In each of its first two games, wins over St. Mary and Carroll County, Lexington Christian has built a 30-point lead with its fullcourt pressure, then coasted through the second half - after Wednesday's 69-40 win over St. Mary, the Lady Eagles beat Carroll 69-41 in the quarterfinals. The victory gives the Jets a 2-1 edge over the Indians in their battle for Marshall County cage honors. North Marshall wrapped up the nip-and-tuck contest in the final four minutes of the game. The victory, the 13 straight| for Coach Jim Voight's "Big Red", was the 21st of the season against only one setback for Hickman County--the First Region's second-ranked club. Hickman's only loss was a 10- point decision last Dec. 7 at Paducah Tilghman-ranked the number one in the region, The Falcons' 21-1 mark is the best won-loss showing in the state. Heath, losers to Hickman County by a 62-46 count two weeks ago at Clinton, moved to a 10-point advantage - 25-15 - with 2:38 remaining in the first half, but the Pirates fell apart against Hickman County's press. Coach Frank Wright's Bucs, rated third in the region by area coaches, gave up three buckets in the last 40 seconds of the first half and the Falcons managed a 29-all deadlock at the break. Heath managed four points in the last two and a half minutes before intermission while the Redmen from Hickman pumped in 14. In an earlier first round game Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, Melvin Watkins hit a jump shot with 1:03 left in overtime and Lew Massey hit four killing points at the end to lift North CarolinaCharlotte to a 79-74 victory. Earlier in the day, Bob Fowler led Kentucky on a ninepoint tear midway through the second half and the Wildcats went on to whip Niagara 67-61. Smith, The Paducah Sun's Purchase Player of the e Year as a junior, has battled a nagging knee injury that has cut into her mobility and production. But Smith, whose 15-point, 13-rebound performance led Fulton County to a 56-52 upset of Marshall County in Saturday night's First Region championship game at Murray State University's Racer Arena, was a star once again on the area's biggest stage. "She was in charge of the basketball game," said Marshall coach Howard Beth. 'Every time she caught the ball on the floor, she was never excited. She never once looked like all she wanted to do was get rid of the ball - she was never out of control. "That's a senior, and that's experience. She's been through this before. She's been to the state tournament, she's the maturity they needed on the floor." Smith also paid off some more tangible dividends. Early in the second half, she surprised the Lady Marshals with a pair of 3-pointers, helping Fulton County (25-6) build a 16-point third-quarter lead. She drew the fifth foul on Leah Lineberry, Marshall's leading scorer, taking a charge early in the fourth quarter. With the Lady Pilots spinning their wheels in their delay game, committing 10 of their 19 turnovers in the fourth quarter, it was Smith who took some of the ballhandling load off her rather inexperienced guards and bought enough time to hold on. Lowes' Lady Blue Devils, topranked all season, were that close to wrapping up the First Region championship they thought they could win from the opening tip of the season the first weekend in November. A throng of Lowes' fans were already beginning to celebrate when Long called time after Susan Geveden fouled out at the 5:45 mark. The Blue Devils, 'Screamin' Demons' to the towel-wavers in the stands, led by 20 points and Long and Carlisle County's Lady Comets may have been the only people here left who didn't think it was over. "We had Susan out and three people on the floor with three fouls," Long noted. "I've been in games before when I had a 20-point lead with five minutes to go and lost. "That's the longest 5 minutes and 45 seconds I've ever been in. I didn't think the last quarter would get over." Long need not have worried. But Lowes saved its best effort for the clincher in the championship game. Nine seasons later, Lee, now a junior point guard, held the scissors in her hand, and trimmed off the Lady Marshals' 10th straight First Region championship. Since 1981 Beth has built a dynasty on the orange and blue baseball court at Draffenville. Saturday night he remembered each and every one of his regional championships while watching his team take down the nylons after edging Graves County 66-62 in the title game. If any season has been a question mark for Beth's regional powerhouse, this was it. Marshall lost five games this season, including one to Graves County, on its home court. Despite those setbacks and the dynasty-shaking questions that came with them, Beth said that gaining this regional title is no more special than the rest. "They have all felt great. It's the kids who work hard all year to get this far, and every group of kids has been special." "You have to credit Howard Beth. What he has done here at Marshall County over the last 10 years is a feat no one in the state will ever match," Graves County coach David Elliott said. The decade-clinching victory didn't come easy. "All the pressure is off us now. I feel 900 percent better now, and everything else is just icing on the cake." Marshall County's basketball team has been a complete package the past 10 years. Some feel its success is the standard by which all girls' basketball programs have been judged, not just in the First Region but all across the Commonwealth. The Lady Marshals have had it all, an undefeated season in 1984, 10 straight trips to the Sweet 16, two state championships, three Miss Kentucky Basketball players and college scholarships to schools all over the South. And that tradition is what kept this year's Lady Marshals going, according to Cadwell, the team's leading scorer.
